Frequently Asked Questions
What problems are solved by diji?
Pipettes falling out of controllers - breakage of pipettes while trying to get controllers to seal - contamination of controllers by sucking fluid into mechanism - uncertainty about whether a controller has been contaminated - awkward and tense handling & operation of controllers/pipettes - leaking controllers - inability to put pipette/controller down to perform another operation - stabbing injuries while loading pipettes into controllers - confusion with valve arrangements in controllers - having to stock both serological and volumetric pipettes and burettes - students making inadvertent volume mistakes - inability to handle viscous and evaporative materials accurately - necessity to set up and disassemble burettes - inability to use burettes in the field -difficulties and dangers in preconditioning a pipette with fluid to be used
What can I use diji for?
One diji can be used for titrating, volumetric transfers, and Buretting.
Anything that you do with a burette, volumetric (bulb) pipette, or graduated pipette you can do with one diji. Plus you can handle dripping solvents and viscous fluids accurately and with ease. Set diji up like a burette or use it freehand – or in the field.
Measure sediments, dispense multiple aliquots from one filling, lay diji on the bench and answer the phone mid task!
What benefits will diji offer my lab generally?
diji delivers faster work, more precise work, and a safer environment - all in all, better outcomes for students and more progress per lesson. Lower equipment replacement costs and less set up and clean up time are other factors that are important in the classroom. In industry diji facilitates handling of problem fluids accurately and easily and avoids 'silent failures' and user variations commonly experienced when using complicated pipettors.
What sizes are available?
1, 2, 5, 10 and 25mL - Class A and Volumetrc A. Specials are available to design.
Is diji a syringe or a pipette?
diji is half syringe-half pipette and we have coined a new word to describe it - SYRETTE.
Can diji be used with one hand?
Yes. Compact and great for work in hoods.
What standards do diji meet?
diji meet the volumetric standards of British Standard 700, ISO and various other International Standards Offices.
Are the markings permanent?
Yes. The markings are made the same way as other pipettes.
What about contamination of the mechanism?
Contamination by fluid going where it shouldn’t (like into the valves of pipette fillers) is virtually impossible because the seal – inside the Syrette (pipette) section isolates the fluid. This is a great advantage in teaching.
Can I use diji with other pipettes?
No. diji Syrettes are made ‘To Deliver’ and are calibrated for the wiping action of the seal.
How can diji replace a burette?
Universities, high schools and industrial labs are already using diji to replace burettes. Burettes have problems in their size and slender shape and the way they need to be cleaned and filled. In education these problems are heightened in the hands of inexperienced students, and in industry time is of the essence and burette set-up and cleaning can long winded – hence the frequent use of graduated pipettes in industry. Diji is ideal in these circumstances because it offers equal or better controlability, but in a convenient freehand mode that requires almost no set up and cleaning time. Where diji is frequently used to replace a burette it is recommended that the diji Buretta model be used.
Diji can be set up in a burette stand – the major difference being that diji is filled by sucking up through the jet. Several diji can be set up on a burette stand like a chemical dispensing carousel.
Will I be ‘stuck’ with having to use expensive diji Syrette replacements?
We guarantee our prices will remain competitive with the industry norms for good quality pipettes.
What about different sizes? Do I need a diji for all sizes of pipette?
Diji does not transfer from one pipette size to another pipette size like old style controllers and fillers - this is what causes the liquid handling problems that we are trying to avoid. Because diji is so controllable and precise, you are able to use one size diji to cover work that would previously require the use of several sizes of pipette.
Because diji is so versatile it can be used for a wider variety of tasks and the end result is that you will need less glassware.
How do I clean diji?
Firstly, diji is autoclavable. Secondly, by sucking up fluid and pumping with the piston, the pipette section is easily cleaned and dried leaving it ready for immediate reuse. Less glassware handling and fewer cleaning processes.
What about shipping?
We have stock points in USA and the EC. The usual shipping options are available – courier, EMS, regular air mail.
Who is using Diji now?
Schools, universities, chemists, analysts, researchers, cosmetics labs, breweries, agricultural labs, oil rig labs, paint labs, field workers etc
Where is diji made?
Australia.
What about leaks and reliability?
In a traditional pipette controller, there are four seals that must be working properly to prevent leaks. The seals are affected by mechanical wear of the rubber when pipettes are inserted, chemical attack of the rubber, incorrect adjustment of rubber seals, incorrect controller /pipette match, loose insertion of pipette, liquid contamination of valves, perished rubber etc. In contrast, diji avoids all these problems by having only one sealing surface. As well as this, the seal is wet, making the seal more reliable. diji's seal is adjustable but this should rarely be necessary.
What about Durability?
diji is much more durable than other pipetting equipment because it is a robust one-piece device The plastic components of diji resist chemicals where necessary and the hand-grip will bounce if dropped. The flexible plastic piston rod (Nylon) can be tied in a knot. Users report a significant reduction in equipment breakage.
Can I get spare parts?
Diji is totally repairable and all parts are available as spare parts or small assemblies (see parts diagrams section).
What about storage?
diji will fit conventional pipette racks, and comes with an aluminium wall hanging bracket, so diji is always ready at hand.
Is the pipette part (Syrette) replaceable?
Yes – just unscrew the old one and screw in a new one
